Map Manager XP is a cross-platform version of Map Manager Classic, the Macintosh graphic genetic mapping program. This demonstration will provide an overview of the analysis and interface functions of the Windows version of Map Manager XP, using datasets from real and simulated genetic crosses. Two analysis features have been added to Map Manager XP within the last year. One allows loci to be sorted automatically into linkage groups and ordered by rapid chain delineation (Doerge, JQTL 2, 1996). The other allows refinement of locus orders by testing local permutations of an order. Otherwise, the features of Map Manager XP are essentially the same as reported last year, although some improvements have been made in interface features. Like Map Manager Classic, Map Manager XP has functions for direct, visually interactive editing and organization of loci, progeny, and phenotype data, and it can display this information as a map or in any of several list forms. It allows multiple open windows of different types for a single chromosome, with changes made in one window propagating automatically to the others. Map Manager XP can analyze backcrosses and intercrosses with dominant or codominant markers, recombinant inbred lines, doubled haploids, and crosses with intermixed backcross and intercross segregation patterns. It includes functions for linkage and map distance which are resistant to segregation distortion. Map Manager XP also has enhanced functions for tracking editing changes through notations which can be attached to chromosomes, loci, progeny and individual phenotypes. A system of labeling allows chromosomes, loci, and progeny to be marked with any combination of attributes. Map Manager XP will sort progeny and it allows multiple named display orders for progeny to facilitate data entry, editing and analysis.
