We have launching a Plant RNA virus Genome Sequencing project in Korea. Our main goal of the project is isolation, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of RNA virus from crops and ornamental plants in Korea. As a first step, we have finished genome sequencing of pepper-infecting potyviruses collected from Korea and from other countries. Several potyviruses infections on cultivated pepper crops are seriously reduced in pepper production in worldwide. Daphne-infecting viruses have been analysed for their genome sequences. Some uncharacterized tobamoviruses have been analysed their complete genome sequences and their relationships have been assessed by phylogenetic tree analysis with known species of the genus Tobamovirus. Phylogenetic analyses of species of the Tobamovirus clearly support that subgrouping is closely related to their host plants demonstrating positive selection of virus-host coevolution may occur. Recent advance and progress of the project will be discussed.
