1 USDA/ARS National Center for Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture, 11876 Leetown Road, Kearneysville, West Virginia, 25430, USA

The USDA/ARS National Center for Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture was officially dedicated on August 31, 2001 in Leetown, West Virginia. The center is currently occupied by six scientists with backgrounds in molecular genetics, quantitative genetics, physiology, and engineering. The initial research emphases focus on the genetic improvement of rainbow trout for aquaculture and the improvement of production systems. Several projects include contributions to the salmonid genetic maps, sequencing of rainbow trout expressed sequence tags (ESTs), identification of genes playing a role in immune response, characterization of mechanisms regulating growth and development, germplasm evaluation for production traits, and analysis of water quality in facility discharge streams.
