INTERNATIONAL TRITICEAE EST COOPERATIVE (ITEC)

ITEC

International Triticeae EST Cooperative (http://wheat.pw.usda.gov/genome/)

At the 9th International Wheat Genetics Symposium held at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon August 2-7, 1998, a proposal was developed to establish a public database of Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) from species of the Triticeae tribe. Only a handful of sequences were available to the public from the dbEST pool at that time. Phase One of this project was to have at least 40,000 ESTs available publicly from July, 2000. Over twenty-five laboratories from twelve different countries participated in contributing to the generation of EST sequences. At the proposal deadline, over 24,000 ESTs were generated and entered into the dbEST database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/dbEST/), and were also made available through the GrainGenes database (http://wheat.pw.usda.gov/) project. The Phase One portion on this project has been complemented by the contributions from other Triticeae associated research projects which have also submitted data to the dbEST databases. Presently, there is a combined resource of over 100,000 EST sequences available from dbEST covering the Triticeae tribe that include sequences from wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), rye (Secale cereale), and other related species. More information may be found at the ITEC homepage (http://wheat.pw.usda.gov/genome/).
