(ed@teosinte.agron.missouri.edu)

Theme: Maize Workshop 2000 is a Forum on Advancement of Maize Research.

Status and progress in maize science worldwide will be discussed and exchanged by attendees. The goal is to accumulate and record perspectives on current and future research and its partnerships, and to relate or rank further needs and objectives. Inputs prior to the Forum are invited from those who expect to participate, and from any who cannot. Presentations of data will be limited to pointers toward posters, and to information that supports or is related to Forum inputs. See the abstract for topics.

Maize genomics sites and a number of other project sites can be accessed via MaizeDB, http://www.agron.missouri.edu/, at http://www.agron.missouri.edu/zprojects.html and http://www.agron.missouri.edu/maize_cooperators.html#Homes.

The Maize Workshop 2000 is a Forum using a peer-discussion structure. Participants will engage in discussion and exchange, will accumulate and record perspectives on status and progress in maize science, and will relate or rank further needs. Inputs prior to the Forum are invited from those who expect to participate on January 9, 8:30 am -11 am, and from any who cannot. Presentations of data will be limited to pointers toward posters, and to information that supports or is related to Forum inputs. The intended product is a resource that can be used and refined by the Maize Community and by the Plant Science Community as a whole. Some actions or advocacies; some perspectives; and some vision of prospects for future advances may be expected from the following:
(1) Consider the relative impact of coordinated vs. independent efforts in maize science - what are the comparative goals and potential outcomes?
(2) Consider models for communication and for serving of data; data availability; data mining - what are the significant limitations and efficiencies?
(3) Compare public and private efforts in maize science, together/independently - what are the comparative goals and potential outcomes?
(4) Identify limitations or barriers to advancement in maize science and its applications - what interferes with knowledge growth and product development?
(5) Identify potential solutions and visions for the future. Inputs prior to the Forum, from persons who expect to participate or from any who cannot, may be sent to coee@missouri.edu.
