Using a somatic cell hybrid clone panel, we have placed nearly 500 genetic markers on a synteny map. Primarily these markers are microsatellite and PCR-based comparative Type I markers, but markers for blood groups, blood proteins and coat color genes have been added to the map based on published linkage with markers analyzed across the synteny panel. We have identified 33 synteny groups, potentially corresponding to one for each chromosome of the horse karyotype. Fifty-seven of the markers tested across the somatic cell hybrid panel have been physically mapped thus allowing the twenty-six synteny groups in which those markers are placed to be assigned to chromosomes. The remaining seven groups are provisionally assigned to chromosomes, based on work in progress with Type I markers and consideration of the information provided by Zoo-FISH studies.
