Research results on unified genomic maps is presented in light of validation in marker-assisted selection and the most questionable challenge, map-based cloning. The use of older vs. younger-tree QTL in woody perennials, potential problems presented by QTL validation in existing pedigrees and a new method for exploring the interface between physical and genetic map in conifers are discussed.
