As part of the EC-ESSA program (European Scientists Sequencing Arabidopsis) a contiguous region of 396,607 bp* was sequenced. This region is located on chromosome 4 around the AP-2 locus (position 93 cM). A CIC YAC, 7A10, containing the AP-2 gene, was isolated and subcloned; subclones have been ordered by an AFLP based methology. Furthermore two BAC clones have been isolated to extent the YAC derived contig. Analysis of the sequence and comparison to public databases predicts 97 genes in this area, representing a gene density of one gene per 4.1 Kb. Only 4 genes had been described in Arabidopsis before. More then half of the genes show no significant homology to known database entries. In total 40% of the genes are highly similar to Arabidopsis EST sequences (>95% similarity). There is a cluster of patatin genes and of genes encoding cytochrome P450. Encoded proteins by this region include several kinases and phosphatases, several homeobox and MADS-box containing proteins, ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes, a MYB-related transcription factor, a peroxidase, a pectinesterase,...
