At the First International Equine Gene Mapping Workshop in Lexington,
Kentucky (1995), the need was recognized for a horse idiogram
defining regions, bands and sub-bands for the precise identification of
individual chromosomes, both G- and R-banded. A consensus standard is
essential 1) for use in the developing physical and genetic linkage maps
using FISH techniques, 2) for defining precisely the physical boundaries of
correspondence between genomes of different taxa, and 3) for defining
numerical abnormalities and the precise breakpoint location of chromosomal
aberrations. The nine-member committee has completed and published its
report: International System for Cytogenetic Nomenclature of the Domestic
Horse (ISCNH). Copies will be available.
