Plant genome mapping data is available from a diverse number of dedicated research centers. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is attempting to provide useful access to this data through the services of the Entrez search and retrieval engine. Initially, this is being done by integrating the available plant chromosome maps with sequence maps derived from the underlying entries in the GenBank database. Entrez users have the options (and benefits) of choosing between a robust client-server interface (Network Entrez) and the widely disseminated and extremely flexible view provided via the World Wide Web (Web Entrez). The latter interface is capable of providing "hot-links" to the underlying genetic (phenotype or marker oriented) maps from which the physical sequence map is derived. This service will be discussed using the Entrez Genomes Zea mays chromosome maps as a model.
