Providing the scientific community with access to annotated genomic data is a vital part of genome informatics. Ideally, current data should be universally accessible via an intuitive and interactive interface. In the last few years many genome centers have moved to Web-based data distribution, to ensure ubiquitous access to current data. Unfortunately, this has limited views of the data to hyperlinked text and images, which are only crudely interactive and often nonintuitive. But recent technological advances may offer a solution to this problem. In particular Java has appeared, a language designed to deliver interactive content over the Internet. We present here our first efforts at applying Java to develop an up-to-date, ubiquitous, interactive browser.
