The updated ACEDB database program (Durbin and Thierry-Mieg, version 4.1) for genome research has been used as the platform for constructing a genome database for Gossypium hirsutum (cotton) and related species, named CottonDB. CottonDB provides a graphical interface to cross-reference several aspects of research relating to cotton. A previous release of CottonDB (rel. 95.1) was available under the ACEDB (ver. 3.0) platform and was accessible over the world-wide-web (WWW) at the Agricultural Genome Information Server (AGIS) located at the National Agricultural Library (NAL). The WWW address for access to CottonDB is http://probe.nalusda.gov:8000/plant/aboutcottondb.html. The newest release of CottonDB (rel. 96.1) makes use of recent improvements to the ACEDB program, and updates information about germplasm collections, species descriptions, molecular markers, nucleic acid sequences, colleagues and literature. A WWW address for data collection has also been established and is linked to the address at AGIS. The CottonDB data collection address provides forms for entry of colleague, literature, metabolic pathway, and other research information to be placed into the cotton database. Usage of the WWW address will help assure maintenance and availability of up-to-date research information for CottonDB.
