To explore the genetic resources involved in rice seed quality, random cDNA clones from rice immature cDNA library were partially sequenced. In the first year of sequencing effort during 1994-1995 as a part of Korea Rice Genome Research Program, about 2000 cDNA clones from rice immature seed were partially sequenced and analysed. 320 cDNA clones were putatively identified by BLASTN homology analysis. More than 200 clones were identified as the genes involved in basal metabolism, starch biosynthesis as well as storage proteins such as prolamines and glutelins. However, about 1500 clones are remained unidentifed. The Rice EST database containing the partial sequences of the clones, blast score, alingment with matching reference sequeunce information is maintained at Myongji BioServer (http://bioserver.myongji.ac.kr) accessible with World Wide Web browser.
