PUBLISHING ARABIDOPSIS INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET

Mary Anderson, Nottingham Arabidopsis Stock Centre, Dept of Life Science Nottingham University, Nottingham, NG7 2RD, U.K

When using Gopher, text and images have to be treated as separate entities which cannot be displayed together in the same document. Text is displayed in a plain fashion with little opportunity for formatting. The World Wide Web (WWW) provides the opportunity for us to think differently about the way information can be displayed on the Internet. The facilitates the display of formatted text including the use of bold and italics and the display of text and images together in the same document. This means that documents can now be published electronically which have the appearance of a hard copy journal. Publishing information electronically is very versatile. Material contained within a publication can be linked to other parts of the same publication, or to any other piece of information on the Internet, through the use of hypertext. Therefore, unlike the hard copy publications, information can be linked to past editions, other articles, databases, gopher servers, etc. Electronically published material can also be indexed to allow keyword searching. In addition, if a hard copy is required, then this can be downloaded and printed out. Several Arabidopsis publications are made available electronically. The NASC Seed List is available through the and allows seed accessions to be browsed and queried. This information is linked to an on line ordering facility, as well as a interface to AAtDB at NAL and the AAtDB Research Companion Gopher server at MGH. The Electronic Arabidopsis Information Service (AIS) newsletter is displayed on the AAtDB server at MGH. Weeds World, the new Arabidopsis electronic newsletter is also distributed through several servers and the AAtDB Research Companion. AU these resources will be discussed.
