A Sample View Of Musa Genome Sequence From BAC Sequence And Annotation

As part of the Global Musa Genomics Consortium, we have been contributing to sequencing BAC clones, funded by the Generation Challenge Programme (Targeted Musa genome sequencing and frame map construction). BAC clones selected by biotic and abiotic stress are subjected to shotgun sequencing. In NIAS, 44 BAC clones of either MA4, MAC, or MBP library are sequenced and the resulting sequences are submitted in GMGC database. For 3,363,679 bases from the half (29) of BAC sequences a total of 792 genes (4.2Kb/ave. gene interval) are annotated using RiceGAAS auto-annotation program followed by gene function being assigned by Gene Function Selector equipped with GAAS. Although most of these genes are predicted as either “hypothetical” or “unknown functions”, some shows homology to disease resistance proteins and transcription factors, indicating these annotated genes being candidates for the trait genes.
Combined these genome data with gene information from EST analysis, it might be possible to elucidate global genomic structure of banana at least in gene-rich region.
