Plans For Bovine Genome Annotation

Christine G. Elsik

Department of Animal Science, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843 USA

The Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center announced the third release of the bovine genome in August 2006. I am collaborating with Baylor HGSC and members of the Bovine Genome Sequencing Consortium to organize an international annotation effort, and will be seeking scientists and students to join the consortium in manually annotating bovine gene models. Participants will use sequence analysis tools such as BLAST and genome browsers to visually confirm intron/exon structure and to describe the function of genes that are of particular interest in their research. Web-based tools, a data submission website and standard operating protocols for annotation will be provided. Input from expert biologists will greatly enhance the scientific value of the bovine genome assembly. An update on progress and plans for bovine genome annotation will be presented.
