LIS Workshop PAG-XIV

The Legume Information System (LIS): A Hands on Workshop

Tuesday - Early Afternoon, January 17, 2006 -- 1:40 pm - 3:50 pm

California Room

How can I get a set of candidate genes when my species is not sequenced?
Does my gene have paralogous copies in the genome?
Are there similar splice variants for this gene?
Can I anchor the genomic sequence in the genetic map?

The answer to these questions can be found in the Legume Information System (LIS). This workshop will help researchers become familiar with the content and tools provided by the Legume Information System (LIS: http://www.comparative-legumes.org). LIS basics will be demonstrated then users will be walked through some use cases relevant to the research being done in the various legume communities. LIS is a publicly accessible legume information resource that integrates genetic and molecular data from multiple legume species and enables cross-species genomic and transcript comparisons. The intent of LIS is to leverage data-rich model plants to fill knowledge gaps across crop plant species, provide the ability to traverse between interrelated data and promote communication among the legume research communities.

Tutorial Level

Beginner to Intermediate. Attendees should be comfortable using the web.

Intended Audience

Once basic LIS tools and data are demonstrated, LIS is relatively easy to use. The intent of this workshop is to help legume biologists, geneticists, and breeders working in genomic and/or genetic research feel comfortable using LIS and answer any questions as to its functionality.
