The Mouse Genome Informatics system (MGI) resource is a public, comprehensive information system representing the genomics and genetics of the laboratory mouse. . MGI makes extensive use of controlled vocabularies such as the Gene Ontology (GO), Mouse Phenotype Ontology, and the Mouse Anatomical Dictionary, to capture and display this data. Information is obtained from both primary literature curation, and large data sets using keyword translation tables. During literature curation, papers are selected for use in annotation based on standards developed at MGI. For GO annotation, our goal is to provide annotation to mouse genes based on experiments performed in the mouse. MGI obtains the GO from the GO FTP site daily, and new annotations are available to the public within 24 hours. Several strategies are used to monitor the quality of the annotations. Quality control reports track obsoleted GO terms from the daily loads and genes annotated to these receive immediate attention. Annotations to GO terms whose definitions have been altered are also logged for curator examination
MGI database resources are funded by NHGRI (HG00330, HG02273), NIH/NICHD (HD33745), and NCI (CA89713).
