“The Cotton Portal” (http://gossypium.info) is a portal with links to Web resources for “Comparative Evolutionary Genomics of Cotton” (NSF Plant Genome, PI: J. Wendel) and “Reducing the genetic vulnerability of Cotton” (USDA IFAFS, PI: A. Paterson). The former is a developing Web-database resource for BAC, EST and gene expression data deriving from phylogenetic analysis. The latter is an integrated Web-database resource for cotton phenotypic and genomic data, developed to provide both a useful management tool for breeders and genomics researchers. Together, they represent a growing range of data types; including diversity, genetic map, transcriptome and performance trial to name a few. We are currently developing and deploying an interactive genetic diversity display that generates phylogenetic tree or cladogram views as well as sub-tree views that are available with a mouse click over the desired sub-tree root node. Also, user adjustable real-time tree cutting and associated clustering are available. A new search tool, “The Accession Portal” will allow users to begin with a cotton accession and search for related diversity, genetic map, pedigree and/or performance trial data. A complementary search tool is being developed to search and integrate the transcriptome and genetic map data sets. This effort is supported by the National Science Foundation, the USDA IFAFS program and the University of Georgia Research Foundation.
