Citrus is one of the most important commodities of the Brazilian economy. With the purpose of consolidating all the information accumulated along the years on citrus breeding, functional and comparative genomics, a web portal was constructed using a combination of software tools developed by the Centro APTA Citrus Sylvio Moreira and others already available to the research community. The portal was designed not only to store information on different aspects of citrus research carried out in our facility, but also to provide a common platform and tools for data mining and analysis. Currently, the portal is formed by nine modules covering EST data from citrus and its relatives, genomic sequence data, molecular markers, micro and macroarray data from both plants and microorganisms, genetic linkage maps, BAC fingerprinting data, germoplasm bank information, clones stocks database, and a citrus metabolic pathway database reconstructed from EST data (CitrusCyc). All analysis pipelines were constructed using scripts in PERL, PYTHON, and Tk/Tcl. Relational databases were built using SQL and the user interfaces were created using PHP, JAVA and HTML. Even though the portal is open only to members of the CitEST community, access could be granted to interested parties after joining the group.
