At the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) we are developing an integrated and modular set of databases both to directly support our research & to integrate our internal research infrastructure with external informatics resources in our major target species (barley and potatoes). In addition, we are developing a targeted set of databases which encapsulate key domain knowledge from SCRI based scientists.
Examples of former category include the LIMS systems which we have developed to support our SNP development work in barley and the development and operation of our barley "DISTILLING" project. Focussed examples of the latter category include the ProtlocDB, Plant snoRNADB and ATNOPDB Arabidopsis datbases. We initially built our databases on the principle of a small and adapable footprint based on a MySQL(or PosgreSQL) Perl and Apache. This has proved to be a remarkably resilient combination.
Current developments include the creation of webservices interfaces to our externally visible databases and the more extensive use of webservcies in our internal infrastructure.
