The rice developmental stages has not yet been characterized in detail. Combination of anatomical data in developmental stages and specific cell populations in organs with gene expression profiles and mutant deficiencies should provide a clear cue for resolving genetic program in rice development and growth. For the purpose of this, we have prepared series of anatomical data in specific organs as items of SEM (scanning electron microscope) image, organ section and normal/transparent photos of morphology. Meanwhile, we are also collecting GUS-stained figures of cells and organs selected from Ds-GUS enhancer trap lines originally developed and from specific enhancer-GUS transgenic plants as well as in situ hybridization patterns detected in any organ. Mutant phenotypes showing specific organ defects are planned to be incorporated to the database as stage specific developmental events and a part of those have been already included. Information about expressing gene and trapped sequences connected to the developmental stages in the database will be related to the genome sequence and gene expression data including micro-array expression profiling in due course. The database is a component of [Oryzabase] ( at http://www.shigen.nig.ac.jp/rice/oryzabase/ ) and so can support wider range of biological interest and can serve as a basic biological resources database in rice.
