We wish to announce the plant genomics resources recently made available through the NCBI Web site Plant Genomes Central at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PMGifs/Genomes/PlantList.html. These resources are new genetic maps for rice, wheat, oat and soybean. The status of the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project is also displayed. The ESTs and UniGene clusters for barley, rice, wheat and corn are positioned on the Arabidopsis thaliana genome by BLAST. Also some plant genome-associated GenBank accessions are available for BLAST query. The output of the organism-specific BLAST query is to the genome search page for the genetic maps of that organism. The goal of the NCBI effort is to prepare a framework for those plants currently with only genetic maps but where chromosome sequence or transcriptome sequence is anticipated within the next five years - i.e. barley, corn, Medicago truncatula, rice, the Solanaceae, sorghum, soybean, wheat, and some commercially pertinent trees.
