DATABASE DEVELOPMENT AND INFORMATION SUPPORT FOR THE USDA PLANT
GENOME RESEARCH PROGRAM.
Kith W. Russell, National Agricultural Library, 10301 Baltimore
Boulevard, Beltsville, MD 20705
This presentation describes information and data-related
activities of the USDA Plant Genome Research Program. The
Program supports the location and isolation of important genes
for the improvement of plant varieties. Special efforts are
underway to manage critical information and data, and to make
sure such information and data are made available quickly to the
scientific community, and are linked with related information and
data from other sources. Information and data management efforts
involve computer and information specialists, researchers, and
administrators from USDA and other organizations throughout the
world, and are being coordinated by staff at the National
Agricultural Library. The presentation includes an overview of
all information-related aspects of the program, and discussion of
specialized information services. A review of database
development activities follows, including: planning and design
considerations; hardware/software; content of the database;
prototype development; the user interface; plans for public
access; relationship to other databases; and collaboration with
other organizations.
